Tsuruga Castle, also known as Aizu-Wakamatsu-jō, is a modern reconstruction of the 1300s Kurokawa Castle, which was damaged and eventually destroyed during the Boshin War. With its unique, red-tiled roof and beautifully-maintained gardens, Tsuruga is a great place to visit if you’re interested in Japanese history. The castle’s interior has been converted into a museum, with displays highlighting samurai culture and Kurokawa’s history. A great little gem is the Rinkaku Teahouse, where visitors can enjoy a tea ceremony in the same style as Japan’s feudal rulers.
